I’m Sensitive to Seasickness. Are Large Steel Motor-Sailers Suitable?

Guests familiar with modern GRP motor yachts often associate onboard comfort with active stabilizers. However, large steel motor-sailors are designed according to a very different naval architecture philosophy, resulting in a naturally calm and stable motion at sea.

Thanks to their steel Guests construction, substantial displacement, low centre of gravity, and full-displacement hull form, steel motor-sailors exhibit slow, soft, and well-damped movement in waves. The yacht’s mass and hull geometry significantly reduce rolling motion, producing a long and gentle roll period that many guests find more comfortable than the quicker, sharper movements typical of lighter motor yachts.

For this reason, conventional fin stabilizers commonly used on lighter GRP motor yachts do not provide meaningful additional benefit on this type of vessel and are therefore often unnecessary.    The yacht’s inherent stability already exceeds what stabilizers are designed to achieve on lighter platforms.

In practice, guests who are sensitive to sea motion frequently report feeling more comfortable aboard large steel motor-sailers, particularly during longer passages and in open-sea conditions. This natural stability is one of the key reasons why steel motor-sailors are favoured for ocean cruising and long-range voyages.

Some of the finest yachts available for charter on the Adriatic are Adri, AdAstra, and AurumSky.
